Breast Augmentation

Beautiful and sumptuous breasts are every woman’s desire. Shape, size and firmness of breasts dictate their attractiveness, and therefore a lack of them is a hindrance to a woman’s self-esteem, as it is a problem she might not be able to share with people around her. Breast implants offer permanent and best solution to women with underdeveloped breasts.

Breast augmentation or breast enhancement is a cosmetic surgery procedure to enhance the size or change the shape of the breasts without altering their texture. It is also called “Augmentation mammoplasty” or “Breast enlargement”.

Breast augmentation is done for two main reasons:

  • Cosmetic-where the aim is to increase size or gain symmetry, contour and shape.
  • Reconstructive – where the aim is to rebuild the breast after mastectomy, like in breast cancer cases.
Reasons to Undergo Breast Augmentation:
  • Congenital deformity or defects that lead to underdeveloped or abnormal breasts
  • Asymmetry in one or both breasts
  • Reduction in size of the breasts after extreme weight loss or after pregnancy and lactation.
  • Poland’s syndrome-condition where the woman lacks breasts altogether due to congenital defects or hormonal deficiency or both.
Breast Enhancement Options:

Cosmetic breast augmentation or breast enlargement or breast enhancement can be done through two techniques- Fat transfer and Breast implants. There have never been more choices for breast augmentation. The following options are available, depending on your medical history, body shape and aesthetic goals.

Saline-filled breast implants are filled with sterile salt water. They may be prefilled at a predetermined size or filled at the time of surgery to allow for minor modifications in implant size.

Structured saline-filled breast implants are filled with sterile salt water, but contain a structure inside so they behave as if filled with soft, elastic silicone gel. This structure enables them to hold their shape better than traditional saline implants. Approved by the FDA and Health Canada in 2014, these implants have been available since 2015.

Silicone gel-filled breast implants are filled with soft, elastic gel and are available in a variety of shapes. All silicone gel breast implants are pre-filled and may require a longer incision for implant placement.

Cohesive gel silicone gel-filled breast implants, also known as “gummy bear” or “form stable” implants, are filled with a cohesive gel, made of crosslinked molecules of silicone, which makes them a bit thicker and firmer than traditional silicone gel implants. This enables them to hold their shape better. Approved by the FDA for use in the United States in 2012, these implants have been available in much of the world since 1992.

Autologous fat transfer removes fat through liposuction from an area of your body in which there are abundant fat cells, such as your thighs, abdomen and hips. After a process of preparation and refinement, the fat cells are injected into your breast. This is a less common method than breast implant augmentation and is still undergoing clinical studies and research for safety and effectiveness.

Candidates

If you’re physically and mentally healthy, 18 years of age or older, not currently pregnant or nursing, and have realistic expectations from breast implants plastic surgery, you are a good candidate for the breast implant surgery or breast augmentation or breast enlargement surgery.

Procedure

The following steps are involved in the procedure:

  • Introducing medications and anaesthesia
  • Making incisions that minimise scarring and are discreet in their location. Incisions are of 3 kinds:
    1. Peri-areolar
    2. Infra-mammary
    3. Trans-axillary incisions.

The type of incision is decided according to the type and size of the implant

  • A pocket is created for the implant to be placed in 2 ways:
    1. Sub-glandular
    2. Sub-muscular
  • The implant is then placed inside the pocket and the incisions are closed and sutures are placed

The scarring is minimal and there are hardly any side effects. It is a very safe surgical procedure, does not interfere with one’s ability to breast feed, does not interfere with mammography, and does not cause any kind of harm to the breast tissue. There is yet another technique of placing the implant through the belly button and taking it up to the breast thereby resulting in no incision and scar on the breast. But the implants used in this technique can only be saline implants which are inflated after they reach the breast. Silicone implants which are much superior cannot be used with this technique.
